Historical Materialism: Workers and Capital is a Marxist journal based in London. The journal's starting point is a shared understanding that Marxism can provide important conceptual tools for understanding the relationship between workers and capital, as well as supporting the struggle of workers against capital. We publish open access academic journal articles on the topics of labour and work, broadly conceived. In our selection of materials, we do not favour any one tendency, tradition or variant of Marxism. Marx demanded the ‘merciless criticism of everything that exists.’ For us, that must also include Marxism itself.
Founded in 2025, the Journal is part of the wider Historical Materialism project, including the main Historical Materialism: Research in Critical Marxist Theory journal, the book series, the annual London conference, and affiliated international conferences. As with the Historical Materialism project more widely, we believe that it is important to have accessible academic venues for Marxists to publish, but we do not require those submitting to be involved in academia. Each article is independently peer reviewed and considered by the editorial board of the journal. Details for submitting articles to the journal can be found here.
The website features the journal's published articles, but is also open to book reviews, reading guides, interviews, archive material, and other contributions within the Workers and Capital theme. If you want to contribute to one of these categories, please contact us.
